Updating Websites – We Should do it Often!
Tonight I’ve been sitting here making updates on one of my mostly ignored websites: How to Write Advertising that Sells. When I looked back, I saw that it had been well over 6 months since I had paid it any attention.
Now what good is that?
I set it up, along with Do You Love Dogs ,Do You Love Horses and my Christmas site a couple of years ago when Joel Comm sent his very persuasive emails and convinced me to buy into his program for Google Adsense templates.
When I had extra time, it was fun writing the content for them – I immediately tossed the content that came with the templates because it was – well, awful. It wasn’t even content – just nonsense.
And the Google adsense – I still haven’t earned back what the templates cost in the beginning. But after 2 years or so, I’m getting close.
So what’s the point? I think anyone can set up an adwords site without buying expensive templates. In fact, it might be easier to do than using the templates. With the web writing programs available now, setting up a simple page isn’t that difficult. I know, because I’m totally non-techie and I can do it.
They aren’t fancy, but when people want information, I’m convinced that they’d rather see something straightforward than try to sort through a maze. I also think we all want pages to load quickly, and all that clutter slows things down.
And that’s the second point. If you’re going to do it, don’t follow my example. Set up only as many sites as you can update regularly, so that when visitors come to see what’s new there really is something new.
If you choose a topic that interests you, you should have plenty to say about it. That’s one reason why out of the hundred or so templates I bought I only used 4: advertising, Christmas, dogs, and horses. The rest of the assortment would have had me out researching for hours just to write one article.
Have you tried it yet? If not, why not set up just one. Or even start a blog about your favorite topic?
If you do, then come back here and tell us about it – and leave your link so we can come to visit.
Best success,
Marte
P.S.
I almost forgot – before you choose a topic and set up a website intending to do Adsense, check out a lot of other sites about the same topic and see if you find ads. I learned that people who advertise “horsey” things don’t use pay per click for content. So while it was fun to write that site, it doesn’t get any Adsense action because there are no ads.
