Reminder: Halloween is a HUGE Selling Opportunity
Last year – when it was too late to do any marketing – I read that aside from the gift aspect, Halloween outranks Christmas as the holiday when people spend the most money.
They buy costumes and thousands of pounds of candy – but they also buy themed dishes, strings of lights, paper plates, napkins, floral arrangements, vases, wall hangings, plastic pumpkins and skeletons, greeting cards, story books, coloring books, stuffed animals, t-shirts, nightgowns, and even underware. And even with that list, I’m sure I missed something.
So what do you offer that can tie to Halloween? If you don’t have a product that fits, maybe you can use the day to cause some stir with a promotion. For instance, one year when I had the real estate office, I purchased 2 of those big grocery-store bins full of pumpkins. Then we put a story in the newspaper saying that every child who came in accompanied by a parent could have a pumpkin.
That got us two free stories in the newspaper – one with photos. And you know that money can’t buy that kind of advertising. People were still talking about that at Christmas.
If you start right now, you’ve got time to plan something spectacular. So do it!
