This is a double – edged threat. Or two scams with the same theme.

The first one: You get a call saying your bad check has been turned over for collection. They want you to pay up and they’ll erase the smear on your credit.

But… this is not an actual collection agency. So check Google and the BBB before you respond at all. They either want your money or your identity.

Second part: Someone takes a check you’ve written, copies the info, and begins writing checks they’ve printed at home. They use fake ID when passing the bogus checks.

Some have your account number – so be SURE to balance your bank statement when it comes in, and check to see that all checks were yours.

Some have a bogus account number, but the check bears your name and info, so it goes to the credit bureaus against your credit record.

Keep a close watch on your credit report, even if you have no intention of opening new accounts, or buying a car or a house. What you don’t know can definitely hurt you.

You can get a FREE credit report right here. And while you’re there, be sure to read the articles… lots of info to protect yourself with.
